Chromatic Tissues, 2021 – ongoing, gouache, washi paper, textile glue. Each tissue is part of the series intended to remain together as a singular artwork. The framing of the Chromatic Tissues is in progress with consideration for suspension upon a surface and stone frame to signify a fixed impermanence on the condition of a human soul relative to geological time. The simultaneous delicacy and endurance of the materials, pigments, and framing are invite a care for difference in humanity in a time where people believe machines can suffice. A gross negligence to difference synthesized life and that of human psyche, soul, spirit, heart and biological function are raised in these abstract works. Each Chromatic Tissue is named after the invisible, ineffable qualities of life, in particular human life, enduring and transforming suffering to knowledge. This is made possible through witnessing beauty and remaining open to the manipulations of biological form through time. The works can be interpreted in several ways, including critical, political valuations distinguishing proof of existence through ‘papers.’ These artifacts acknowledging citizenry or personhood through self-evidenced physical expression are conversely formed through delicately bonded outgrowths of biological nature. The dimensional aspects of paper, often flattened, are formed into ripples, holding formations. The becoming from being are emphasized in this way of demonstrating a philosophy of interiority, positing subjective notions as mere side effects of deficiencies in awareness. Through deepening awareness, an individuated and shared communication of individual difference can relate through sensorial perspectives.

 

Synesthesia is believed to be present in 2-4% of the world population. This series aims to posit a higher of percentage of people who experience sensorial perceptions reliant upon developing awareness of the subconscious and somatic realms. Further interpretations of Chromatic Tissues could be a warning about human spirits, as a cautionary artifact to those who deny “others'” experiences of reality. In a world made of myths, each body becomes a needle and thread*. While truth has often been regarded as dangerous, heart-centered people carry an important choice to make regarding otherness.
