Mari Amman is a global artist, researcher, pluralist, and synesthete. She serves a secular sacred to revere Beauty. By working with the poetic art of Sublime Rheology and Geological Empathy, her work with images, installations, poetry, performance, painting, sculpture, video and design expose multi-layered understandings in relationships of Place, Memory and Embodiment related to history, technology, science, mortality, violence, subjectivity, resources, landscape and built environments. The transcendent experience of the ways the subconscious and somatic reveal, are worked with to confront concepts and systems that denature or conserve. Her forthcoming works are iterations of Trânsito and Suspended Planes at TEKS with UiO Cancer Cell research, Gong Teppe, Igloo. Landcape-Memory-Eros, Aesthetic Resonances, and Pozzolana developed based on pedagogical methods in Pattern Recognition, Visual Literacy, and Body Architecture. She is an EIT Expert Culture Reviewer, and collaborates on design projects with music, science, architecture, and cultural professionals.
Her interest in art and science grew from being raised near the Agonic line, surrounded by forest and prairie preserves, a nuclear power plant, and industrial agriculture. Nordic-Italian ancestry to political activist Ellen Ammann and landscape artist Harriet Sundström motivated auto-ethnographic research, while her critical apprehensions in geopolitics and background in design and marketing continue her social psychology research. Foundations in philosophy, music, and performance coupled with researching the parietal aspects of perception guide her examinations of the implications of ethics and morality in the use of the imaginary to influence the real. Art Farm Iowa (US, 2023) and Arte Expuesto (MX, 2023) exhibited and collected her work. Afjordance was screened during AWMAS (UCSB, 2020), Omniscient, was awarded 1st by the jury in the Imaging New Eurasia exhibition, in Gwangju (SK, 2015). She was poet and artist-in-residence in Paris (FR, 2023), Bonny Doon (US, 2022), Kjerringøy Land Art (NO, 2020) with forest bathing guide and Sublime Timescapes talk. She developed trauma informed methods and psychological research at Angelot-Trélex (CH, 2019), PraksisOslo, Praxisdansfestivalen, and Butoh at KHiO (NO, 2017, 2018). She holds a Master of Fine Art (honors) with Frankfurt School Theory/Conceptual Studio Practice from Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles (2015) and Bachelor of Fine Art (Dean’s List) in Advertising/Interior Design from Illinois Institute of Art (2006), photography and photo history at College of Lake County in Grayslake, Illinois, and social psychology at Ehime University in Matsuyama, Japan (2012).
