Gong Teppe is the working title for sculpture and performance art. The textile is deprived of being an actual carpet or gong and is instead knitted to evoke a memory often associated with the grandmother or mother’s work. I am seeking support to exhibit the artwork and construct the base, for the 100% wool textile to hang by, such as gongs usually stand in Japanese temples. The sculpture evokes ritual and the domains of the sacred throughout both the home and the public space, while critically looking at the way cultures are exotified as a means to sweep things under the rug. Though a rug warms the feet, a blanket warms the body, and textiles decorate, these elements of comfort or niceness carry connotations confronted in the performance of beating the dust out of the rug. This kind of violent action considered just a part of life is to be examined. The comfort, warmth, and ritual of transcontinental associations between Asia, Europe, and the United States meet with a performance with an object to knock out the dust with a broom, tree branch, stones, or stick, to be determined through discussion with the exhibition space. The tensions between softness, violence, and public and private spaces are meant to reveal difficult feelings of anxiety in the home, invisible labor, and open spaces to air the difficult realities people endure even when everything appears to look beautiful and quiet. There is the possibility after the performance to bring the knitted material onto the ground to have viewers join together in conversation and tea sharing.
Gong Teppe er arbeidstittelen for skulptur og performancekunst. Tekstilen er fratatt å være et egentlig teppe eller gong og er i stedet strikket for å fremkalle et minne som ofte forbindes med bestemors eller mors arbeid. Jeg søker støtte til å stille ut kunstverket og konstruere basen, for 100% ulltekstil å henge ved, slik som gonger vanligvis står i japanske templer. Skulpturen fremkaller ritualer og det helliges domener i både hjemmet og det offentlige rom, mens den kritisk ser på måten kulturer eksotifiseres på som et middel til å feie ting under teppet. Selv om et teppe varmer føttene, et teppe varmer kroppen og tekstiler dekorerer, har disse elementene av komfort eller pent konnotasjoner som blir konfrontert med å slå støvet ut av teppet.
