Being is a held breath
and between these branches
are one-hundred-thousand breaths
toward the heaven
before the descent
back to the present.

Entre As Árvores (Among the Trees) Project Synopsis: The concept I propose is to work with the community to make textile weavings among cork trees, engaging bodies to create these weavings forming a story of individual choices and their relationship with the elements of the land. The process is time intensive, allows individual choices in the colors and textures the textiles will be finalized in. The individual textiles will then be installed together, keeping the negative space both from within and among the tree trunks, to form a “landscape” as an installation in the museum (or exhibition site) in Portugal. The negative spaces formed is important to convey the Vagar meaning, as a way of showing the too often taken for granted labor of nature and people, of those which conserve and grow healthy landscapes, the labor of love woven between the bodies (sublime rheology), cooperation of people, the way material offers itself as a form of time, and ultimately cultivate a deep listening to and appreciation of the land (geological empathy). The project is then aimed to travel to different sites after Entre As Árvores_Mari Amman_Evora2027.
Collaborations with this project thus far include: Marco Granados/Curator and Director of PARAC Education in Mexico, Steve Hanson/Founder and Director of Art Farm Iowa, Amélia Siegel Corrêa/Alhures Galeria/Cultural professional in multimedia, publishing, and translation. Letters of recommendation follow the images. A PDF of the project outline, goals, and biography of participants is here Entre As Árvores_Mari Amman_Evora2027.
Norwegian wool, supplies in my studio: Wool/other materials locally sourced as meaning to the project.

In addition to the project, workshops with the community can be made. Example: pattern recognition (stone tracings), body architecture, forest bathing, cooperating with the team and community, as well as create photo/video documentation for making a video and book about the project.
